In the context of the European Green Deal and increasing demands for sustainability and transparency in the supply chain, the EU has decided to introduce the digital product passport (DPP). From 2027 onwards, the digital product passport will become mandatory for initial product groups, particularly in industrial settings. The goal is to digitally provide relevant product information such as material composition, origin, energy consumption, carbon footprint, recyclability, and other data throughout the entire product lifecycle.
The DPP is organized in the form of standardized digital twins that are accessible via platforms and interfaces such as QR codes, RFID, or APIs for various actors along the value chain. Companies must ensure that all product data from enterprise resource planning systems (ERP), production planning and control systems (PPS), and manufacturing execution systems (MES) are harmonized and made cross-departmentally available. Data sovereignty is paramount, as is the continuous process of data collection and maintenance. It is currently expected that the digital product passport will be mandatory for numerous product categories by 2030 at the latest, which will fundamentally and long-term influence the digital infrastructure of the manufacturing industry.

What does the DPP mean for manufacturing companies?

The introduction of the digital product passport brings both short-term adaptation needs and long-term strategic challenges that companies in the manufacturing sector must address.
Many companies are already intensively involved in capturing and structuring product and process data. The DPP requires clean and structured data management along the entire supply chain, which poses complex challenges especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Different IT systems such as ERP, PPS, and MES must be harmonized and continuously supplied with up-to-date data. The technical integration of new technologies such as QR code, RFID, and digital twins often requires significant adjustments to existing IT infrastructures.
Regulatory requirements for the DPP, especially concerning the data types to be mandatorily recorded and the form of their provisioning, have not yet been conclusively defined across all industries. Companies must act flexibly and continuously respond to innovations, which also applies analogously to the processes, tools, and software used for this purpose.
Companies must also ensure that the required transparency for consumers, authorities, and recycling companies is guaranteed while maintaining sufficient protection of confidential product information.
Even without a crystal ball, it must be assumed that all these challenges will be further intensified by ongoing regulatory developments and rising expectations for sustainability and transparency.

tetys guides you with a new red thread through your value flow

The tetys team supports companies not only with the software itself but already with individual workshops and analysis methods to identify the necessary degree of digitization and sensible modules for the respective manufacturing operation. Thus, the introduction of the digital product passport does not become an organizational feat but a welcomed task for your future-proof, networked, and transparent production. We strive to provide practical answers to the requirements of the digital product passport. Our tools for production control (tetys MES) as well as the comprehensive and smartly optimized production planning (FEKOR) enable a cross-departmental workflow that links all necessary data sources and shopfloor processes and prepares them in real-time for your digital product passport register:
Our systems connect detailed planning with data collection at the machine and process level, creating a continuous feedback loop and continuously synchronizing product data. This not only captures production progress, machine states, and quality parameters but also lifecycle data such as material composition, from which recyclability for the DPP is derived.

The tetys MES offers, in addition to the base system, various specific modules that help manufacturing companies master the challenges of the digital product passport and associated data acquisition. Central is the capability to capture, analyze, and consolidate machine data from all production steps in real time, thereby providing the data basis for the DPP seamlessly and reliably. Only through clear visualizations and dashboards can companies maintain a live overview of relevant process and machine data, enabling complete documentation of raw material origin, processing parameters, and quality.
Responsive tool management and maintenance functions assist in systematically capturing maintenance data and repair histories and linking them to the manufactured items in the product passport.
With tetys’ CAQ (Computer-Aided Quality), quality data can be directly linked to the digital life cycle of the product, facilitating traceability and significantly enhancing reporting capabilities.
Open interfaces allow the easy integration of external supplier data and certificates so that the required data formats for the DPP are always current and auditable.
tetys also places great importance on sustainable support for your company: Our systems are modular and can be gradually adapted to the requirements of the DPP and digitalization. As a manufacturer, you benefit from the experience and advice of our experts and receive personalized implementation that addresses both short-term and long-term challenges.
